We were recently called out to a property in West Bridgford, Nottingham, after the homeowner reported a fault with their boiler. On inspection, we identified the mains circuit board as the source of the problem.

Given the age of the boiler and the cost of the repair, we gave the customer our honest assessment and they decided to go ahead with a full replacement.

We removed the old Ideal Isar boiler and fitted a brand new Baxi 800 range combination boiler in its place, complete with a 10-year manufacturer's parts and labour warranty.

The Old Boiler: Ideal Isar

As Image 1 shows clearly, the outgoing boiler was an Ideal Isar, a model that was popular in its day but is now well past its best in terms of efficiency, reliability and parts availability.

The unit visible in the image has clearly been in service for a considerable number of years, with the worn casing, aged pipework and surrounding wall condition all telling the story of a boiler that has done its job faithfully but has reached the end of its working life.

The fault on this particular unit was a failed mains circuit board, which is the component responsible for controlling the core electrical functions of the boiler.

Circuit board replacements on boilers of this age carry a double problem.

The parts themselves are increasingly difficult to source and carry a premium price, and even once replaced, other age-related faults are likely to follow before too long.  

In this case, the honest advice was clear: a replacement was the more sensible investment.

Honest Advice First

This is an approach we take on every job. We never recommend a replacement boiler simply because it is the bigger job.

On this occasion, having assessed the age, condition and fault on the Ideal Isar, we gave the customer a straightforward assessment of the situation and left the decision entirely in their hands.

They chose to replace, and we are confident it was the right call for their circumstances.

The New Boiler: Baxi 800 Range

The replacement boiler we installed is a Baxi 800 range combination boiler, one of the most capable and well-specified combi boilers currently available in the UK domestic market.

Baxi are one of Britain's most established boiler manufacturers, with a long track record of producing reliable, efficient heating appliances, and the 800 range sits at the top of their domestic product line.

Performance & Efficiency

The Baxi 800 is a high-efficiency condensing combination boiler, meaning it recovers heat from the flue gases that older non-condensing boilers simply wasted up the flue.

This translates into meaningfully lower gas consumption for the same level of heat output, so that the homeowner's energy bills are reduced from the moment the new boiler is commissioned. Compared with an ageing Ideal Isar, the difference in running costs will be noticeable.

The boiler provides both central heating and instantaneous domestic hot water on demand from a single, compact wall-mounted unit, with no need for a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank.

As Image 2 shows, the new Baxi 800 cuts a clean, modern profile on the wall, with a clear digital display showing the flow temperature and a compact, well-organised pipework arrangement below.

10-Year Manufacturer's Warranty

One of the most significant advantages of the Baxi 800 range for homeowners is the 10-year manufacturer's parts and labour warranty that comes with the boiler.

This warranty covers the cost of any parts and labour required to repair the boiler during the warranty period, meaning the homeowner has genuine long-term protection against repair bills for a full decade following installation.
