MagnaClean Filter Installation In Nottingham

At S & H Plumbing and Heating, we recently completed a central heating system upgrade for a client in Nottingham. This project involved the installation of a MagnaClean filter and a water hammer arrestor, crucial components for improving the efficiency and longevity of central heating systems. Here’s a detailed look at how we approached this installation to achieve optimal heating performance for our client.
The Need For A MagnaClean Filter
Central heating systems are essential for maintaining a comfortable home environment, especially during the colder months. However, over time, these systems can accumulate sludge, rust, and other debris that circulate through the pipes, reducing efficiency and potentially causing damage. To address this issue, we recommended installing a MagnaClean filter—a device designed to capture these unwanted particles, ensuring that the system remains clean and functions efficiently.
The MagnaClean filter acts as a safeguard for the central heating system, trapping iron oxide and other debris before they can circulate through the system. This not only improves the system’s efficiency but also extends its lifespan by preventing damage to key components like the boiler and radiators.
Installing The Water Hammer Arrestor
In addition to the MagnaClean filter, our client was experiencing issues with loud banging noises from the pipes, commonly known as water hammer. Water hammer occurs when a valve closes suddenly, causing a pressure surge or shockwave that can result in noisy and potentially damaging vibrations within the plumbing system. To remedy this, we installed a non-return water hammer arrestor.
The water hammer arrestor works by absorbing the shock waves generated when water flow is suddenly stopped, thereby preventing the pipes from banging. This reduces noise whilst protecting the plumbing system from potential damage caused by repeated pressure surges.
The Installation Process
The installation began with a thorough assessment of the central heating system to identify the optimal locations for both the MagnaClean filter and the water hammer arrestor. We determined that the best position for the MagnaClean filter was on the return pipe, just before it enters the boiler. This placement ensures that the filter can effectively capture any debris before it reaches the boiler, thereby providing maximum protection.
For the water hammer arrestor, we identified the specific area where the banging noise was most pronounced and installed the arrestor accordingly. This involved cutting into the existing pipework and securely fitting the arrestor to absorb any shock waves.
Once the installation sites were determined, we proceeded with the work, carefully cutting into the pipes and fitting both the MagnaClean filter and the water hammer arrestor. We made sure all connections were properly sealed to prevent any leaks and tested the system thoroughly after installation to confirm everything was working as expected.
After completing the installation, we ran a series of tests on the central heating system to make sure everything was functioning optimally. The MagnaClean filter immediately began capturing debris, and the water hammer arrestor successfully eliminated the banging noise, much to the client's relief.
