We recently responded to an unusual emergency call from a customer in Mapperley, Nottingham, who was hearing strange noises coming from behind her gas fire. What started as a potential appliance fault turned into an unexpected wildlife rescue operation that required our technical skills!

Our boiler repair specialists in Nottingham are trained to handle all kinds of heating emergencies, but this particular call-out proved to be one of the most memorable we've encountered. The situation required careful attention to both the safety of the trapped bird and the integrity of the gas appliance.

The Emergency Call

The customer contacted us reporting persistent noise coming from behind her gas fire unit. These types of sounds can indicate various issues, from mechanical problems to blocked ventilation, so we arranged an immediate site visit to investigate.

Upon arrival at the property in Mapperley, we could immediately hear the unusual sounds the customer had described. The noises were intermittent but clearly coming from within the gas fire housing, requiring careful investigation to determine the cause.

Our first step was to conduct a thorough safety assessment of the gas fire installation. We checked for any signs of mechanical failure or blockages that might be causing the unusual sounds before proceeding with any dismantling work.

The gas supply was safely isolated before beginning any investigation work. This standard safety procedure allowed us to remove the fire unit without any risk to the property or its occupants.

The Unexpected Find

Upon removing the gas fire from its housing, we discovered the source of the noise - a pigeon that had somehow become trapped behind the unit. The bird was sitting patiently in the confined space, clearly waiting for rescue.

The pigeon appeared to be in good health despite its predicament. It had likely entered through the flue system and become disoriented, eventually finding itself trapped behind the gas fire housing with no clear route to freedom.

Pigeon Removal

We carefully handled the situation to make sure both the pigeon and the gas fire system remained undamaged. The bird was gently captured and immediately taken outside where it was safely released.

The pigeon flew away immediately, showing no signs of injury or distress from its temporary confinement. The successful rescue was achieved without any harm to the wildlife or damage to the customer's heating system.

System Inspection

Following the rescue, we conducted a thorough inspection of the gas fire and its associated components. We checked for any damage that might have occurred during the bird's presence and examined the flue system to understand how the pigeon had gained access.

No damage was found to any part of the gas fire system. The bird had not disturbed any of the internal components or created any blockages that would affect the appliance's operation.

Professional Refitting

The gas fire was refitted to its original position, making sure all connections were secure and properly aligned. We took extra care to check that no debris or nesting materials had been left behind during the bird's stay.

All safety features were tested to confirm they were functioning correctly. The gas connections were checked for leaks, and the ignition system was verified to be working as intended.

Comprehensive Testing

We conducted a full operational test of the gas fire to confirm it was working safely and efficiently. The appliance ignited correctly, produced the expected flame pattern, and operated without any unusual sounds or performance issues.

The customer was present during the testing phase and was able to see that her gas fire was restored to full working order. She expressed her satisfaction with both the pigeon rescue and the professional service provided!

Customer Satisfaction

The customer was delighted with the outcome of this unusual service call. Not only had we resolved the mysterious noise issue, but we had also safely rescued the trapped pigeon and restored her gas fire to perfect working condition.
